Five Loaves
Fives Loaves is a deed ministry that feeds the hungry in the neighborhood of First Presbyterian Church in Kampala, Uganda. Since Five Loaves started in 2003, it feeds an average of 730 people each month. They mostly come from the adjoining slum where vegetable growing is nil. The church was getting many requests for food, requests that they could not usually honor since their first obligation is to care for their own poor.
$380 per month has fed 730 people/mo and paid the elderly women who purchase and prepare the food for serving.
The realized benefits of Five Loaves:- The church is using this avenue to present the Gospel to those who come to eat and are willing to listen to the Truth.
- This has given church members opportunities to learn the value of mercy ministries in their witness to Christ.
- Singers, testifiers and preachers are helping to reach the hungry that usually are also hungry of soul. These laborers include the youth of the church.
- The mal-nourished are being fed in the name of Christ.
- The evening services of First Presbyterian Church have become more powerful in the Spirit of Christ.
- The youth work of the church is thriving, since most of the hungry who come are youth, people whose growing bodies have a greater craving for food.
- Some local orphans are coming, receiving food, and are hearing the Word of God.
Additional Aspects of Five Loaves Given the Current Food Crisis in Uganda:- Distribute good, treated seeds to the poorest of farmers according to the pattern of Matthew 25 Parable of the Talents. Underway now for a year, this service is showing fruit.
- Distribute dry staple foods in the name of Christ via the deacons of the churches. In November, '09, at a cost of 20cents per meal, food has been distributed to the under-fed neighbors of our churches to feed up to 5,000 people. Another distribution was made in mid December.
- We wish to add 80 contributors of from $20 per mo and up.
- Regular prayer supporters are the backbone of the program's success.
Thank you so much for helping to make this mercy ministry a reality! Fewer than 15 people are making it happen. And the Lord seems to be blessing the program hand over fist, or as John 1 puts it, with "grace upon grace." If you can spread the word and help us expand, so much the better! This is an ideal service opportunity for anyone, including teen groups and people who want to make a large difference with few dollars. Each dollar feeds more than two cooked meals to hungry people, or dry food packets to feed 5 persons. It provides opportunities for local Christians under leadership of their deacons to serve the needy in the name of Christ! |
